New Patient Dental Exam in Sterling, VA | Only $29

In almost thirty years of practicing dentistry in Sterling, I’ve noticed something that surprises a lot of people: the patient who feels the most nervous walking through our door is rarely the patient with the most “wrong” with their teeth. Anxiety about a first dental visit and the actual state of your mouth have almost nothing to do with each other. Some patients who haven’t seen a dentist in a decade sit down in my chair and everything looks fine. Others who come in every six months like clockwork have more going on than they expected. There is no correlation between how long it’s been and how much I’m going to judge you — because I’m not going to judge you at all.

I’m Dr. Mahnaz Jafari, and I own and practice at Inova Dental Clinic here in Sterling, Virginia. I wrote this article because I want anyone who is putting off that first appointment — out of fear, embarrassment, or just not knowing what to expect — to know exactly what happens when you walk in, so there are no surprises and, hopefully, a lot less anxiety.

You Won’t Be Judged Here — I Promise

Let’s start with the thing most new patients are actually worried about, even if they don’t say it out loud: “It’s been years. Am I going to get a lecture?”

No. You’re not.

Life happens. People move, lose dental insurance between jobs, get busy raising kids or caring for aging parents, or simply had a bad experience at another office years ago that made them avoid dentists altogether. I’ve heard every version of this story, and none of it makes you unusual. Gaps in dental care are one of the most common reasons people come to see me, not a rare exception. My job isn’t to make you feel bad about the past — it’s to help you figure out where things stand today and what, if anything, needs to happen next.

One thing I try to do differently at Inova Dental is explain every single step before I do it. I don’t believe in surprising a patient with a tool, a number, or a diagnosis they weren’t prepared for. If I’m about to take an X-ray, you’ll know why. If I’m checking your gums, you’ll know what I’m looking for. If I find something that needs attention, you’ll hear it from me directly, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a treatment plan. You set the pace. That’s not a slogan — it’s genuinely how my team and I run a new patient visit.

What Actually Happens During Your First Visit

I know “not knowing what to expect” is half the anxiety, so let me walk you through it step by step, exactly as it happens in my office.

1. Welcome and Paperwork

When you arrive, our front desk team will greet you and get you started on your new patient paperwork — basic health history, insurance or Medicaid information if you have it, and a few questions about what’s brought you in. If filling out forms in the waiting room isn’t your idea of a relaxing start, you don’t have to do it that way. Call us ahead of time at (703) 433-1400 and we’ll send the forms to you so you can fill them out at home and just hand them over when you arrive. Either way works — whatever makes you more comfortable.

2. Digital X-Rays

Next, we’ll take a set of digital X-rays. These give me a look at what’s happening below the surface — between your teeth, under old fillings, and inside the bone that supports your teeth — none of which I can see just by looking in your mouth. Digital X-rays use a small fraction of the radiation that older film X-rays used, and the images show up on a screen almost instantly, so I can walk through them with you right there rather than making you wait.

3. The Exam

This is the heart of the visit, and it’s simpler than most people expect. I’m checking four main things:

  • Your gums. I’m looking for inflammation, bleeding, or any early signs of gum disease. Healthy gums should be pink and firm, not puffy or tender. Gum disease is extremely common and, caught early, is very manageable — it’s one of the most important things I check.
  • Decay. I’m checking each tooth, along with your X-rays, for cavities — including the small ones you can’t see or feel yet. Catching a cavity early usually means a simple filling instead of something more involved later.
  • Your bite. I’ll have you bite together naturally so I can see how your upper and lower teeth meet. An uneven bite can cause wear, jaw discomfort, or cracked teeth over time, so it’s worth a quick look even if nothing feels wrong.
  • A quick oral cancer screening. I’ll take a short look at your tongue, cheeks, and the tissue in your mouth and throat. This only takes a minute, but it’s an important part of every new patient exam, and it’s one of the simplest, most valuable screenings I do all day.

I explain all of this in plain language as I go — no dental jargon, no rushing through it. If something doesn’t make sense, ask me. I’d rather stop and explain than have you leave confused about your own mouth.

4. An Honest Conversation — No Pressure

Once the exam is done, I’ll sit down with you and go over exactly what I found. If everything looks healthy, I’ll tell you that plainly. If there’s something that needs attention — a cavity, early gum disease, a cracked filling — I’ll explain what it is, why it matters, and what the options are. What I won’t do is pressure you to commit to treatment on the spot. This is your mouth and your decision. Some patients want to schedule everything that day; others want time to think it over, check their finances, or get a second opinion. Both are completely fine with me.

5. Next Steps

Before you leave, our team will help you figure out whatever comes next — whether that’s scheduling a cleaning, a filling, or simply a follow-up exam down the road if nothing needs immediate attention. You’ll leave with a clear picture of where things stand, in writing if you’d like it, with no vague “come back and see” left hanging over you.

What It Costs — and Why That Shouldn’t Stop You

I want to be upfront about cost, because I know it’s often the real reason people delay that first visit.

New patients at Inova Dental Clinic can get a complete new patient exam and digital X-ray for $29 — no insurance required. This isn’t a bait-and-switch offer with hidden fees attached; it covers exactly what I described above: the exam, the X-rays, and an honest conversation about what I find.

If you do have insurance, we’re happy to use it. And if you’re on Medicaid, including Virginia Cardinal Care or Smiles For Children, we accept that too, for both children and adults. You shouldn’t have to choose between seeing a dentist and paying rent, and I’ve built my practice around that belief.

Most new patient visits take about 45 minutes to an hour from start to finish, including the X-rays, the exam itself, and time to talk through what we found. I know that’s a real chunk of a workday or a day off, so we try to make scheduling as flexible as possible. We offer same-day appointments when our schedule allows, and Saturday appointments from 8am to noon by request, for patients who can’t easily get away during the week.

Why Patients Across Loudoun County Choose Inova Dental

I’ve been practicing dentistry for nearly three decades, with advanced training and certification in both orthodontics and implant dentistry, which means I can handle a wide range of care personally rather than sending you elsewhere for every specialized need. I’m a general dentist with that additional training — not a specialist or an orthodontist — but it lets me offer more comprehensive care under one roof.

I’m also fluent in both Farsi (Persian) and English, and a member of our team is fluent in American Sign Language, so we can comfortably communicate with a wide range of patients and families, not just those who speak English fluently. That matters to me personally, and I think it matters to a lot of the families we see.

While our office is in Sterling, we regularly welcome families throughout Loudoun County, including patients coming from Ashburn and Dulles who want a dentist they can stick with long-term rather than bouncing between offices.

And if your visit uncovers something beyond the scope of the new patient exam — whether that’s a cosmetic concern, a missing tooth, or crooked teeth you’ve always wanted to address — take a look at our current special offers. We regularly run promotions to make additional treatment more affordable, and I’ll walk you through anything that applies to your situation.

If it’s been years, or you’ve never had a dental home in this area, I’d genuinely like to meet you. There’s no lecture waiting for you here — just a straightforward exam, an honest conversation, and a team that will explain everything before it happens.
